Sergeant
Dragging my ass out of the shower, I ran my hands up my face and scratched my scalp furiously. The knots in my back and shoulders had been pounded out, and, now, I wanted to go do a little pounding out of my own. Wrapping a towel around my waist, I wiped my feet on the mat before leaving the bathroom, and Titan was still waiting for me on the other side of the door.
“You got a huge packet thing in the mail from the American Service Animal Organization. I put it in your room.” Daniel bumped my shoulder with his fist, and surprise rose my brows at how quickly that packet came in the mail. “Are you spending the night with your girlfriend again? Just so we can plan the party accordingly.”
“Are you jealous after all that time buttering me up with dinner and drinks, huh?” He puckered up his lips, and I shouldered past him to throw open my bedroom door. Living in a house with all guys could be trying at times, but Daniel didn’t try to follow me into my room- for obvious reasons, I guess? Kicking the door shut, I dried myself roughly before draping the towel on my computer chair and glancing at Titan. “Are you jealous, Titan?”
Titan was the chillest dog I’d ever met; he just plopped onto his dog bed while I opened a drawer to fish for a pair of boxers. Snatching my mail off my dresser, I only briefly looked through what few letters I had on my way to the large manila envelope underneath.
“Benefits- credit card- credit card… prison?” Sitting on my bed, I ripped open the letter from Sing Sing Correctional Facility with a dark curiosity splattering across my chest. “I’ve never even been to New York. It’s in New York, right, Titan?”
“Dear Sergeant- blah blah- heard you became a SEAL…” My brows furrowed deeply as I scanned the letter that was either written by a 6 year old or a middle school dropout. That’s a stretch. “Your mom’s doing well in prison. I’d like it to stay that way. Why don’t you come by to talk about it?”
“What the fuck is this shit?” This letter was written by a pubescent girl threatening another pubescent girl to a fight behind the bleachers- of that, I was thoroughly convinced. Turning the page, I wasn’t surprised to find nothing on the back side, and I crumpled the paper up to toss it into the trash can by the top of my bed. Leaning to snatch my phone off the nightstand, I searched for my dad’s contact as I dumped the funk mail beside me.
“I’ve seen better extortion attempts from a fucking lizard in the desert.” Grumbling as I listened to the ring, I leaned back as I opened the packet- the only piece of mail I did care about.
“Hello-”
“Hey- Dad, guess what I just got in the mail… from Sing Sing Correctional Facility.” Speaking up quickly, I leaned back to run my free hand over my head and neck roughly.
